"과거를 지배하는 자가 미래를 지배하고, 현재를 지배하는 자는 과거를 지배한다." 익숙하게 들리는가? 잘 알려져 있듯이, 이것은 조지오웰의 소설 '1984'의 인용구이다. 이 소설은 악명높게 디스토피아적인 미래와, 전제주의를 유지하기 위해 프로파간다와 역사 수정을 담당하는 정부부처 '진실성'에서 일하는 한 주인공에 관한 이야기이다. 그보다 덜 알려져 있는 것은, 이 소설과 현재의 대한민국이 놀랍고도 두려울 정도로 유사하다는 점이다.
많은 사람들에게 경악스럽게도, 11월 3일 대한민국 박근혜 대통령은 그녀의 보수 정부에 의해 정부의 허가를 받은 단일한 역사 교과서를 편찬할 것이라는 계획을 발표했다. 정부에 의해 선택된 집필진에 의해 씌여질 새 교과서는 2017년부터 모든 중고교 과정에서 의무화된다.
"He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past." Does this sound familiar? As is well known, this is an excerpt from George Orwell's 1984, a novel about an infamous dystopian future and a character, who works in the Ministry of Truth, responsible for propaganda and historical revisionism to maintain despotism. What is less known is that there is a striking, almost alarming resemblance between this fictional book and South Korea today. To many people's dismay, on November 3rd, South Korea's President Park Geun Hye announced her Conservative government's plan to produce a single government sanctioned history textbook. The new textbook, which will be written by a government-selected panel, will be compulsorily implemented in all secondary schools by 2017.
