지난 해까지 스마트폰을 기반으로 한 결합형 VR 헤드셋이 많았지만, 올해 들어 스마트폰을 쓰지 않는 독립형 VR 헤드셋이 출시되고 있는데요. 사실 독립형 VR 헤드셋은 휴대성을 빼면 스마트폰과 거의 같은 구성을 갖고 있어 가상 현실에 알맞은 기능을 넣는 데 조금 부족한 점이 있었습니다. 이런 문제를 해결하기 위해 퀄컴이 가상 현실에 적합한 프로세서를 공식 발표했습니다. 퀄컴이 공개한 XR1은 VR과 AR을 위한 고성능 프로세서로 스냅드래곤 821 또는 835를 기반으로 만들어진 것으로 알려졌습니다. 특히 스마트폰의 전력 효율성을 위해서 속도를 제한하던 특성을 이 프로세서에서는 제거해 지속적으로 고성능 모드를 유지합니다. 또한 6자유도 헤드 트래킹은 물론 3자유도/6자유도 컨트롤러를 모두 쓸 수 있도록 보완했고 2K 그래픽과 4K 해상도의 동영상을 처리합니다. 하지만 XR1 SoC의 코어의 구성이나 아드레노 GPU의 제원 등 공개하지 않은 부분이 많아 좀더 지켜봐야 할 것 같습니다. 퀄컴은 HTC와 메타, 피코와 부직스 등 VR/AR 제조사들과 파트너 관계를 맺고, 올 하반기부터 XR1을 공급할 예정입니다. from techG http://techg.kr/21831 via IFTTT

디스플레이 제조사들이 VR/AR용 고해상도 디스플레이를 속속 내놓고 있는 가운데 소니도 이 대열에 동참했습니다. 소니는 1600×1200 픽셀을 가진 0.5인치(대각 길이 1.27cm) OLED 디스플레이인 ECX339A를 공식 발표했습니다. 앞서 소니는 1280×960 픽셀을 가진 ECX337A를 플레이스테이션 VR에 적용한 바 있는데, ECX339A는 그보다 1.6배 더 높은 해상도를 갖고 있습니다. 작은 크기의 디스플레이에 많은 픽셀을 담을 수 있도록 픽셀 간격을 6.3μm으로 좁히는 한편 종전보다 1/2의 전압으로 작동해 저전력으로 기존과 같은 성능을 냅니다. 또한 듀얼 라인 프로그레시브 방식을 이용하면 다른 VR용 디스플레이보다 높은 240Hz의 재생율을 갖고 있어 화면 떨림에 의한 멀미는 줄어들 것으로 보이는군요. 신형 OLED(왼쪽)과 종전 OLED의 설계 방식의 차이 소니는 이 OLED 디스플레이의 샘플 양산을 시작했고 오는 11월부터 양산할 예정입니다. 이 OLED를 채택할 VR 헤드셋이 무엇일지 알 수는 없지만, 적어도 차기 PSVR의 디스플레이 수준이 어느 정도인지 짐작할 수는 있을 것 같네요. from techG http://techg.kr/21838 via IFTTT

Why does asteroid 2015 BZ509 orbit the Sun the backwards? As shown in the featured animation, Jupiter's trojan asteroids orbit the Sun in two major groups -- one just ahead of Jupiter, and one just behind -- but all orbit the Sun in the same direction as Jupiter. Asteroid BZ509 however, discovered in 2015 and currently unnamed, orbits the Sun in retrograde and in a more complex gravitational dance with Jupiter. The reason why is currently unknown and a topic of research -- but if resolved might tell us about the early Solar System. A recently popular hypothesis holds that BZ509 was captured by Jupiter from interstellar space billions of years ago, while a competing conjecture posits that BZ509 came from our Solar System's own distant Oort cloud of comets, perhaps more recently. The answer may only become known after more detailed models of the likelihood and stability of orbits near Jupiter are studied, or, possibly, by observing direct properties of the unusual object. via NA

모토롤라는 스마트폰을 사업을 시작한 이후 초기 때를 제외하고 한동안 ‘모토'(moto)라는 브랜드를 주로 써왔습니다. 레노버에 모토롤라의 스마트폰 사업부가 인수된 이후에도 그랬죠. 그런데 모토 브랜드를 조금씩 줄이는 것과 동시에 모토롤라라는 이름으로 돌아올 듯합니다. 최근 유출된 모토롤라 원 파워의 하단에 모토롤라가 선명히 새겨져 있는 것이 확인됐기 때문입니다. 안드로이드 헤드라인 이 독점으로 공개한 모토롤라 원 파워는 안드로이드 원을 채택한 스마트폰으로 미국에 출시했던 모토 X4를 대체하는 제품입니다. 안드로이드 원이 인도 같은 신흥 시장에서 안드로이드 스마트폰 보급을 위해 나온 것이라는 점을 감안할 때 미국에 출시했던 모토 X4의 성격을 확실하지 않았으나 모토롤라 원 파워는 신흥 시장이 아닌 미국 시장을 겨냥하고 있는 것은 확실해 보입니다. 비록 안드로이드 원이라도 노치 디자인은 물론 화면 둘레와 본체 테두리의 간격이 거의 없는 베젤리스 디자인을 넣는 등 최신 스마트폰 디자인의 경향을 모두 담고 있는데요. 여기에 아이폰 X처럼 왼쪽에 수직으로 후면 듀얼 카메라를 넣는 등 기존 제품보다 좀더 아이폰과 비슷한 느낌을 살리려 애쓴 흔적이 있습니다. 이 제품이 언제 출시될 지는 모르지만, 적어도 ‘모토’ 브랜드의 실패 이후 ‘모토롤라’라는 옛 이름의 귀환을 얼마나 많은 이들이 반길지 지켜봐야 할 것 같네요. from techG http://techg.kr/21829 via IFTTT

구글의 안드로이드 업데이트 정책은 제품을 발표한지 2년 안팎으로 운영체제 업데이트를 보증하고 있는데요. 구글도 2년 전 스마트폰 브랜드를 픽셀로 이전한 이후 종전에 출시했던 넥서스 시리즈에 대한 업데이트를 줄이고 있는 상황이고, 넥서스 6와 넥서스 9에 대한 지원은 보안 업데이트를 제외하고 거의 끊었습니다. 그런데 구글이 넥서스 6용 안드로이드 7.1.1 누가 업데이트를 공개했다고 나인투파이브구글이 소식을 전했네요. 안드로이드 P가 나오는 마당에 안드로이드 7.1.1을 내놓는 게 무슨 의미가 있느냐고 할 수도 있지만, 사실 구글은 지난 해 초 안드로이드 7.1.2 업데이트 제품 목록에서 넥서스 6를 배제해 지원 중단을 공식한 바 있기 때문에 이번 일은 조금 특이하게 여겨지는 부분입니다. 거의 4년 가까이 되는 제품에 운영체제 업그레이드를 한다는 것도 상식적으로 보이진 않긴 합니다만, 넥서스 6 이용자들은 의외의 보너스를 받은 느낌은 아닐까 싶네요. 물론 넥서스 6를 출시하지 않은 한국에는 거의 드물테지만요. from techG http://techg.kr/21825 via IFTTT

The Marbled Godwit is one of my preferred bird encounter when I visit Tofino. For every 30 to 40 Whimbrel , I unfortunately only saw one Marbled Godwit. Unfortunately also, most sightings were under not too desirable light. Fog, shimmers etc are common challenges ... I wonder if this is the same in other popular shorebird destinations? Most of these can be identified by their distinctive colors. The aurora here appears green at the bottom, red at the top, and is visible across the left of image. Airglow appears orange and can be seen hovering over the curve of the Earth. The circular Manicouagan Crater in Canada, about 100 kilometers across and 200 million years old, is visible toward the lower right and is covered in white snow and ice. Stars, light in color, dot the dark background of space. City lights appear a bright yellow and dot the landscape. Does it rain on the Sun? Yes, although what falls is not water but extremely hot plasma. An example occurred in mid-July 2012 after an eruption on the Sun that produced both a Coronal Mass Ejection and a moderate solar flare. What was more unusual, however, was what happened next. Plasma in the nearby solar corona was imaged cooling and falling back, a phenomenon known as coronal rain. Because they are electrically charged, electrons, protons, and ions in the rain were gracefully channeled along existing magnetic loops near the Sun's surface, making the scene appear as a surreal three-dimensional sourceless waterfall. The resulting surprisingly-serene spectacle is shown in ultraviolet light and highlights matter glowing at a temperature of about 50,000 Kelvin. Each second in the featured time lapse video takes about 6 minutes in real time, so that the entire coronal rain sequence lasted about 10 hours. On May 23rd, after time-lapsing the supercell south of Arthur as it neared highway 61, we raced north to get back ahead. But after five miles or so, the rain stopped momentarily and I looked back to see something in my rear-viewer mirror that made me slam on the brakes. We jumped out of the truck to one of the most amazing sights I've ever seen storm chasing in my career. Only way I can describe this is a supercell with a hail core microburst that seems to happen in the span of five minutes or less. It was crashing so fast and the rain was rapidly approaching from the west, that I had no ability to really time-lapse it. But it didn't matter...we stood there in utter amazement...made me once again realize how much I love doing this and why. https://flic.kr/p/27s79aQ

This stunning group of galaxies is far, far away, about 450 million light-years from planet Earth and cataloged as galaxy cluster Abell S0740. Dominated by the cluster's large central elliptical galaxy (ESO 325-G004), this reprocessed Hubble Space Telescope view takes in a remarkable assortment of galaxy shapes and sizes with only a few spiky foreground stars scattered through the field. The giant elliptical galaxy (right of center) spans over 100,000 light years and contains about 100 billion stars, comparable in size to our own spiral Milky Way galaxy. Named for a cosmic cloud hunter, Australian astronomer Colin Stanley Gum (1924-1960), The Gum Nebula is so large and close it is actually hard to see. In fact, we are only about 450 light-years from the front edge and 1,500 light-years from the back edge of this interstellar expanse of glowing hydrogen gas. Covered in this 40+ degree-wide monochrome mosaic of Hydrogen-alpha images, the faint emission region stands out against the background of Milky Way stars. The complex nebula is thought to be a supernova remnant over a million years old, sprawling across the Ship's southern constellations Vela and Puppis. 최근 디스플레이 업체들이 인치당 많은 화소를 넣은 고밀도 디스플레이 개발 소식을 내놓고 있는데요. 이번에는 LG와 구글 이 새로운 VR/AR용 고밀도 OLED 디스플레이를 디스플레이 위크 2018에서 공개했습니다. 고밀도 디스플레이 개발을 위한 비밀 프로젝트를 실행해 온 LG와 구글은 종전보다 3배더 밀도 높은 화소를 가진 1443ppi의 OLED를 개발하고 연구 성과를 발표했습니다. 이 OLED 디스플레이의 면당 4800×3840의 픽셀을 담고 있고 도트간 간격을 11.6 마이크로미터까지 좁혀 스크린 도어 문제에서 자유로울 것 같군요. 현재 공개된 시제품의 패널 크기는 4.3인치, 휴대 전화 디스플레이보다 빠른 응답 시간을위한 n형 LTPS 백플레인을 사용합니다. 또한 120Hz의 주사율로 작동하므로 깜빡임에 의한 멀미 현상도 줄일 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 서브 픽셀을 기본과 달리 가로로 긴 형태로 구성해 시야각을 160도에 가깝게 개선했다고 보고서에서 밝혔습니다. 이 디스플레이가 언제 상용화될지 알 수 없지만, VR과 AR의 큰 고민 하나를 덜어줄 것은 분명해 보이네요. from techG http://techg.kr/21816 via IFTTT

하나의 셀에 여러 개의 비트를 저장하면서 낸드 플래시에 저장할 수 있는 공간이 대폭 늘었고, 이는 대용량 SSD의 출현에 영향을 미쳤는데요. 최근 인텔과 마이크론이 공동 개발한 QLC 낸드 플래시 메모리가 출시된 이후 이를 이용해 만든 SSD를 마이크론에서 출시했습니다. QLC 낸드 플래시는 하나의 메모리 셀에 4비트의 데이터를 저장하는 데 종전까지 3비트를 저장한 TLC 낸드 플래시 메모리에 비해 33% 용량이 증가됩니다. QLC 낸드 플래시를 적용한 5210 ION 시리즈는 엔터프라이즈 시장을 겨냥해 최고 1.92TB에서 최대 7.68TB의 저장 공간을 가진 대용량 제품으로 구성될 예정입니다. 하지만 늘어난 용량에 비해 QLC 내구성에 대해서 아직 확신하긴 이른 듯합니다. 셀의 저장 비트를 늘릴 수록 늘어나는 전압 레벨을 구분하기 어려워 쓰기와 지우기의 성능과 수명이 떨어지는데, 기술적으로 안정되기 전까지 내구성 문제에 직면했던 TLC처럼 16개 전압 레벨을 가진 QLC 낸드 플래시도 좀더 지켜봐야 하는 부분이 있으니까요. 다만 소비자용 TLC SSD에 비하면 좀더 긴 수명을 갖고 있다는군요. 그래도 순차쓰기를 하는 경우 수명이 짧아질 수 있어 마이크론은 지속적인 비디오 녹화 같은 작업에 5210 ION을 권장하지 않는다는군요. from techG http://techg.kr/21814 via IFTTT

This galaxy is having a bad millennium. In fact, the past 100 million years haven't been so good, and probably the next billion or so will be quite tumultuous. Visible toward the lower right, NGC 4038 used to be a normal spiral galaxy, minding its own business, until NGC 4039, to its upper left, crashed into it. The evolving wreckage, known famously as the Antennae, is featured here. As gravity restructures each galaxy, clouds of gas slam into each other, bright blue knots of stars form, massive stars form and explode, and brown filaments of dust are strewn about. Eventually the two galaxies will converge into one larger spiral galaxy. Such collisions are not unusual, and even our own Milky Way Galaxy has undergone several in the past and is predicted to collide with our neighboring Andromeda Galaxy in a few billion years. Why does the right part of this image of the Moon stand out? Shadows. The terminator line -- the line between light and dark -- occurs in the featured image so that just over half the Moon's face is illuminated by sunlight. The lunar surface appears different nearer the terminator because there the Sun is nearer the horizon and therefore causes shadows to become increasingly long. These shadows make it easier for us to discern structure, giving us depth cues so that the two-dimensional image, when dominated by shadows, appears almost three-dimensional. Therefore, as the Moon fades from light to dark, shadows not only tell us the high from the low, but become noticeable for increasingly shorter structures. For example, many craters appear near the terminator because their height makes them easier to discern there. The image was taken two weeks ago when the lunar phase was waning gibbous. How do Jupiter's clouds move? To help find out, images taken with NASA's Juno spacecraft during its last pass near Jupiter have been analyzed and digitally extrapolated into a time-lapse video. The eight-second time-lapse video, digitally extrapolated between two images taken only nine minutes apart, estimates how Jupiter's clouds move over 29 hours. Abstractly, the result appears something like a psychedelic paisley dream. Scientifically, however, the computer animation shows that circular storms tend to swirl, while bands and zones appear to flow. This overall motion is not surprising and has been seen on time-lapse videos of Jupiter before, although never in this detail. The featured region spans about four times the area of Jupiter's Great Red Spot.
