Why is this neutron star off-center? Recently a lone neutron star has been found within the debris left over from an old supernova explosion. The "lonely neutron star" in question is the blue dot at the center of the red nebula near the bottom left of E0102-72.3. In the featured image composite, blue represents X-ray light captured by NASA's Chandra Observatory, while red and green represent optical light captured by ESO's Very Large Telescope in Chile and NASA's Hubble Space Telescope in orbit. The displaced position of this neutron star is unexpected since the dense star is thought to be the core of the star that exploded in the supernova and created the outer nebula. It could be that the neutron star in E0102 was pushed away from the nebula's center by the supernova itself, but then it seems odd that the smaller red ring remains centered on the neutron star. Alternatively, the outer nebula could have been expelled during a different scenario -- perhaps eve

For 55 consecutive nights Mediterranean skies were at least partly clear this summer, from the 1st of July to the 24th of August 2018. An exposure from each night was incorporated in this composited telephoto and telescopic image to follow bright planet Saturn as it wandered through the generous evening skies. Through August, the outer planet's seasonal apparent retrograde motion slowed and drifted to the right, framed by a starry background. That brought it near the line-of-sight to the central Milky Way, and the beautiful Lagoon (M8) and Trifid (20) nebulae. Of course Saturn's largest moon Titan was also along for the ride. Swinging around the gas giant in a 16 day long orbit, Titan's resulting wave-like motion is easier to spot when the almost-too-bright Saturn is digitally edited from the scene. via NASA https://ift.tt/2P1qe3H

#구글은 녹턴(Nocturne)이라는 코드명의 하이브리드 픽셀 디바이스를 개발하고 있는 것으로 알려졌는데요. 이 제품이 ‘구글 픽셀 슬레이트'(Google Pixel Slate)라는 이름으로 나올 것으로 보입니다. 구글 픽셀 슬레이트는 구글이 공식적으로 선보일 크롬 OS 태블릿으로 보입니다. 지금까지 크롬 OS 태블릿은 에이서에서 교육용 프로토타임을 선보였던 것을 제외하고 구글은 정식 발표한 적이 없던 터라 픽셀 슬레이트에 더 관심을 모으고 있습니다. 아직 구글은 픽셀 슬레이트를 정식 발표하기 전이므로 구체적인 제품 이미지가 노출된 적은 없는데요. 다만 키보드 액세서리 업체인 브릿지(Brydge)가 픽셀 슬레이트로 부르기 전 녹턴의 시제품을 장착할 수 있는 키보드를 제품과 함께 웹사이트에 노출시켜 존재를 드러냈습니다. 이 제품이 10월 9일에 있을 구글 신제품 발표회에 등장할지 아직 알 수 없습니다만, 가능성은 높아 보입니다. 이제 크롬 OS 기반 태블릿도 교육 시장에서 흥미로운 싸움을 하게 될 것 같네요. from techG http://techg.kr/22364 via IFTTT

지난 20일 소니코리아는 출시 발표회를 열고 자사의 무선 노이즈 캔슬링 헤드폰, WH-1000XM3를 선보였다. WH-1000XM2를 사면 WF-1000X 를 주는 행사를 여는 등, 아무리 봐도 재고 털이의 목적이었던 정품 등록 행사들과 IFA2018에 등장한 WH-1000XM3모습 등… 어찌 보면 지극히 당연한 순서였다. 첫 출시부터 4년 동안 변하지 않은 아이유와 함께, 4년 동안 꾸준한 변화를 거친 WH-1000XM3를 살폈다. 1. 디자인 디자인은 MDR-1000X부터 WH-1000XM3에 이르기까지 꾸준히 바뀌었다. 비싼 가죽을 얹었다가 가죽이 뜯어지는 문제가 생기자 플라스틱으로 가죽을 흉내 냈다가, 이번엔 아예 정직한 느낌의 소프트 코팅으로 마무리했다. 소니가 밝히는 변화의 원인은 조작감. 기존 가죽 재질의 플라스틱에선 터치 인터페이스가 부드럽지 못하기 때문이란다. 디자인을 판단하는 것은 결국 받아들이는 사람 마음이겠으나, 헤드폰이 보여주는 고급스러움이 사라져버린 건 아쉬움으로 남는다. WH-1000XM2가 직관적이지 않거나, 조작하기 어렵다거나 하지 않았기에 더욱 아쉬운 점이다. 2. 착용감 구조가 조금씩 바뀌며 착용감이 대폭 달라졌다. 소폭 줄어든 무게와 헤어밴드 재질의 변화, 그리고 밴드의 디자인이 슬림하게 개선돼 머리에 눌리던 부담을 줄였다. 또한, 하우징 구조의 변경으로 귀를 누르던 압박감이 줄었다. 귀 끝이 살짝 눌려 쓰다 보면 아려오는 통증은 이제 사라질 것으로 보인다. WH-1000XM2에서 소소한 아쉬움으로 남던 착용감이 이제 안락하게 바뀌었으며, 개인적으로 가장 높게 평가하는 부분. 비슷한 기능의 다른 제품과 비교했을 때, 이제 착용감으로 무시당하는 일은 없을 것이다. 3. 노이즈 캔슬링 with QN1 1000X 시리즈의 핵심인 노이즈 캔슬링. 소니는 QN1 프로세서를 탑재해 기존 제품보다 더 뛰어난 노이즈 캔슬링 성능을 갖췄다고 밝혔다. 오큘러스는 스마트폰이나 PC 연결 없는 두 개의 단독형 가상 현실 헤드셋을 개발해 왔습니다. 그 중 하나인 오큘러스 고는 지난 봄에 출시했고, 프로젝트 산타크루즈(Project Santa Cruz)라는 또 하나의 단독형 가상 현실 헤드셋의 출시를 기다리고 있었는데요. 드디어 출시일과 가격이 공개 됐습니다. 오큘러스는 지난 2016년부터 개발해 온 프로젝트 산타크루즈를 2019년 봄에 출시한다고 밝혔는데요.. 정식 이름은 오큘러스 퀘스트(Oculus Quest). 가격은 64GB 저장 공간을 갖춘 모델을 400달러(세금 제외)에 판매합니다. 오큘러스 퀘스트는 봄에 발표한 오큘러스 고와 비슷한 단독형 헤드셋이면서도 다른 점을 갖고 있는데요. 무엇보다 헤드셋 외부의 광각 카메라로 실시간으로 외부의 사물과 컨트롤러를 추적하기 때문에 축 회전의 3자유도만 가능했던 오큘러스 고와 달리 상하좌우전후 이동이 가능한 6자유도를 구현합니다. 오큘러스는 이를 위해 ‘오큘러스 인사이트'(Oculus Insight)라른 기술을 개발해 외부의 컨트롤러와 공간 추적에 따라 내부 추적에 반영하고 공간 이탈을 막는 가디언 시스템을 포함했습니다. 오큘러스 퀘스트는 시야의 편안함을 극대화할 수 있도록 렌즈 간격 조정 기능을 통합하고 눈마다 1,600×1,440 픽셀을 가진 디스플레이를 탑재했습니다. 또한 오큘러스 고와 비슷한 내장 오디오를 넣었는데, 베이스를 더 강화했다는군요. 오큘러스 고와 달리 6자유도를 구현하므로 이에 맞는 새로운 콘텐츠가 필요한데요. 오큘러스는 출시와 함께 전용 콘텐츠도 내놓을 예정인데, 기존 PC용 오큘러스 리프트 중 일부 콘텐츠로 오큘러스 퀘스트용으로 출시될 것으로 보입니다. from techG http://techg.kr/22358 via IFTTT

지난 5월, 영상 카메라 전문 업체인 레드 디지털 시네마는 페이스북과 협업을 발표했습니다. 레드의 카메라 기술을 더한 페이스북의 360도 카메라를 만들기 위한 과정이었고, 페이스북과 레드가 협업한 산물을 드디어 공개했습니다. 페이스북 오큘러스 커넥트 5에서 매니폴드(Manifold)라 부르는 360도 서라운드 카메라를 발표한 것이지요. 이번에 발표한 카메라는 페이스북이 2년 전 360도 서라운드 캡처를 할 수 있는 카메라의 상업용 버전인데요. 2년 전에는 개발자용으로 공개한 바 있는데 당시에는 매우 낯선 볼류메트릭 촬영이 가능한 카메라였죠. 이 카메라는 일반 360도 카메라와 달리 공간의 깊이 정보를 함께 저장할 수 있기 때문에 가상 현실 헤드셋을 썼을 때 축 회전과 전후 및 상하좌우 이동을 할 수 있는 것이 특징입니다. 매니폴드는 16개의 RED 카메라로 구성되어 있는데, 카메라 당 주문형 슈나이더 8mm, F4.0, 180도 어안 렌즈로 구성되었습니다. 한번에 초당 60프레임의 8K 비디오를 캡처하고, 단일 케이블로 전력 및 데이터를 전송합니다. 인터페이스는 웹 응용 프로그램 기반 제어 인터페이스로 되어 있고, 캡처된 영상의 후 처리를 위해 SDK까지 제공합니다. 현재 이 장치의 가격은 알 수 없습니다. 다만 이전 개발자 모델의 경우 3천만 원 정도였던 것을 감안하면 더 싼 가격은 아닐 것 같군요. 중요한 것은 이 카메라가 가상 현실 비디오 시장에서 적지 않은 영향을 미칠 것이라는 점입니다. 가상 현실 창작자들이 눈독들여야 할 카메라인 것은 분명할 것 같네요. from techG http://techg.kr/22356 via IFTTT

LG가 10월 4일 차기 플래그십인 V40 씽큐를 발표를 앞두고 정보를 조금씩 공개 중인데요. 최근 미국 AT&T에서 출시할 것으로 보이는 V40 씽큐의 렌더링 이미지가 등장했습니다. LG전자는 이미 V40에 광각, 표준, 줌 등 3개의 후면 카메라를 탑재할 것이라고 밝힌 바 있습니다. 그리고 몇 가지 소문에 따라 전면 2개의 카메라를 넣는 등 모두 5개의 카메라가 탑재될 것이라고 알려졌는데, 실제로 누출된 제품 이미지 및 LG 전자에서 공개한 동영상을 통해서 확인할 수 있습니다. The small, northern constellation Triangulum harbors this magnificent face-on spiral galaxy, M33. Its popular names include the Pinwheel Galaxy or just the Triangulum Galaxy. M33 is over 50,000 light-years in diameter, third largest in the Local Group of galaxies after the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), and our own Milky Way. About 3 million light-years from the Milky Way, M33 is itself thought to be a satellite of the Andromeda Galaxy and astronomers in these two galaxies would likely have spectacular views of each other's grand spiral star systems. As for the view from planet Earth, this sharp image shows off M33's blue star clusters and pinkish star forming regions along the galaxy's loosely wound spiral arms. It is still not known why the Sun's light is missing some colors. Here are all the visible colors of the Sun, produced by passing the Sun's light through a prism-like device. The spectrum was created at the McMath-Pierce Solar Observatory and shows, first off, that although our white-appearing Sun emits light of nearly every color, it does indeed appear brightest in yellow-green light. The dark patches in the above spectrum arise from gas at or above the Sun's surface absorbing sunlight emitted below. Since different types of gas absorb different colors of light, it is possible to determine what gasses compose the Sun. Helium, for example, was first discovered in 1870 on a solar spectrum and only later found here on Earth. What can you see in the night sky this season? The featured graphic gives a few highlights for Earth's northern hemisphere. Viewed as a clock face centered at the bottom, early (northern) autumn sky events fan out toward the left, while late autumn events are projected toward the right. Objects relatively close to Earth are illustrated, in general, as nearer to the cartoon figure with the telescope at the bottom center -- although almost everything pictured can be seen without a telescope. As happens during any season, constellations appear the same year to year, and, as usual, the Leonids meteor shower will peak in mid-November. Also as usual, the International Space Station (ISS) can be seen, at times, as a bright spot drifting across the sky after sunset. Two small robots have begun hopping around the surface of asteroid Ryugu. The rovers, each the size of a small frying pan, move around the low gravity of kilometer-sized 162173 Ryugu by hopping, staying aloft for about 15 minutes and typically landing again several meters away. On Saturday, Rover 1A returned an early picture of its new home world, on the left, during one of its first hops. On Friday, lander MINERVA-II-1 detached from its mothership Hayabusa2, dropped Rovers 1A and 1B, and then landed on Ryugu. Studying Ryugu could tell humanity not only about Ryugu's surface and interior, but about what materials were available in the early Solar System for the development of life. Does the Sun return to the same spot on the sky every day at the same time? No. A more visual answer to that question is an analemma, a composite image taken from the same spot at the same time over the course of a year. The featured analemma was composed from images taken every few days at 4 pm near the village of Callanish in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland, UK. In the foreground are the Callanish Stones, a stone circle built around 2700 BC during humanity's Bronze Age. It is not known if the placement of the Callanish Stones has or had astronomical significance. The ultimate causes for the figure-8 shape of this an all analemmas are the tilt of the Earth axis and the ellipticity of the Earth's orbit around the Sun. At the solstices, the Sun will appear at the top or bottom of an analemma. Equinoxes, however, correspond to analemma middle points -- not the intersection point. Irregular galaxy NGC 55 is thought to be similar to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). But while the LMC is about 180,000 light-years away and is a well known satellite of our own Milky Way Galaxy, NGC 55 is more like 6 million light-years distant and is a member of the Sculptor Galaxy Group. Classified as an irregular galaxy, in deep exposures the LMC itself resembles a barred disk galaxy. Spanning about 50,000 light-years, NGC 55 is seen nearly edge-on though, presenting a flattened, narrow profile in contrast with our face-on view of the LMC. Just as large star forming regions create emission nebulae in the LMC, NGC 55 is also seen to be producing new stars. Cosmic dust clouds and young, energetic stars inhabit this telescopic vista, less than 500 light-years away toward the northern boundary of Corona Australis, the Southern Crown. The dust clouds effectively block light from more distant background stars in the Milky Way. But the striking complex of reflection nebulae cataloged as NGC 6726, 6727, and IC 4812 produce a characteristic color as blue light from the region's young, hot stars is reflected by the cosmic dust. The dust also obscures from view stars still in the process of formation. At top right, smaller yellowish nebula NGC 6729 bends around young variable star R Coronae Australis. Near it, glowing arcs and loops shocked by outflows from embedded newborn stars are identified as Herbig-Haro objects. On the sky this field of view spans about 1 degree. Inside the Cocoon Nebula is a newly developing cluster of stars. The cosmic Cocoon on the upper right also punctuates a long trail of obscuring interstellar dust clouds to its left. Cataloged as IC 5146, the beautiful nebula is nearly 15 light-years wide, located some 3,300 light years away toward the northern constellation of the Swan (Cygnus). Like other star forming regions, it stands out in red, glowing, hydrogen gas excited by young, hot stars and blue, dust-reflected starlight at the edge of a nearly invisible molecular cloud. In fact, the bright star near the center of this nebula is likely only a few hundred thousand years old, powering the nebular glow as it slowly clears out a cavity in the molecular cloud's star forming dust and gas.
